Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) can affect eating, drinking, and overall comfort. Speech and Language Therapists are trained to assess and manage oropharyngeal swallowing difficulties, helping individuals find safe and effective ways to eat and drink comfortably. If you experience food or liquids feeling stuck, throat discomfort, or frequent coughing while eating, a structured clinical swallow assessment can help identify difficulties and provide strategies to support safer swallowing.

Who Can Benefit from Swallowing Therapy?

I work with adults experiencing:

  • Difficulty swallowing food or liquids – Including coughing, throat clearing, or feeling like food is sticking

  • Globus sensation (lump in the throat feeling) – Persistent throat discomfort without a clear obstruction

  • Throat tension affecting swallowing – Muscle tightness contributing to swallowing difficulty

  • Changes in swallowing after illness, surgery, or voice problems

  • Chronic throat clearing related to swallowing issues

Speech and Language Therapists are qualified to assess and manage oropharyngeal swallowing difficulties but do not diagnose medical conditions. Swallowing difficulties can have many different causes and often require medical investigation. Dysphagia should be thoroughly assessed in a medical setting, particularly if it is sudden, severe, or accompanied by weight loss or recurrent chest infections. If you have concerns about your swallowing, I can provide assessment, therapy, and guidance on next steps, including referrals for further medical investigation if needed.
